VINCULUM Audiophile Cables

We have been working for more than 25 years with signal transmission cables used in professional environments, most of the times with critical applications which demand a deep knowledge about the signal distortions introduced by every cable (signal reflection, intermodulation products, phase-shift distortion, delay-group distortion,...).

However, even with all the acquired knowledge and using ultra-expensive measurement equipment , we have needed more than 10 years of research to determine the exact physical principles that can explain the audible differences provoked by cables in a truly scientific manner.

This allowed us to understand the real influence on sound of the different cable geometries, the cable materials (dielectrics, metal alloys, insulations... ), its physical and electrical parameters, the influence of vibration and mechanical stress on the cable, the strengths and weaknesses of each connector design, etc...

These factors are widely known by the whole audiophile community and, of course, by most audio cable manufacturers. But, in our opinion, many important problems have been neglected or are badly solved in the vast majority of audiophile cables.

Some audiophile cables are selected by its euphonic sound colorations or some timbrical compensation when it is needed, always at a price in dynamics and realism. It is much more difficult to design cables which fully respect the high dynamics and aliveness offered by the best High-End equipments. First of all, we have selected the best performance cables available.

All ultra-high quality signal transmission cables we use are special designs made in Switzerland by one of the world leading manufacturers, but it was necessary to develop our own technologies and processes to adapt the cables to carry musical signals, and to translate its very high performance into very high musicality and realism.

The audio performance of our cables strongly depends on these exclusive processes rather than on the cable itself, a concept quite different from the usual trend of confering musical properties to any specific cable material (as occurs with the use of different metals and alloys ( copper, gold, silver...), cryogenically treated materials,etc... ).

Vinculum speaker cables

The Vinculum Speaker cables are based on the best quality coaxial cables available. We have selected this type of cable construction because it allows us the most accurate phase control within an ultra-wide frequency band, where most other cable geometries used in audio may introduce non desirable phase rotations.

We believe that this cable feature is necessary to minimize distortions in the waveform of the very complex transients that form the musical signals. But even with the better frequency response, we still had the same impedance mismatch problems exhibited by all speaker cables. So our speaker cables include impedance adaptation modules to ensure the best coupling between amplifiers and speakers. Inside these modules we use selected components embedded in hard epoxy resin but no equalization is applied at all in the audio spectrum.

The Vinculum Speaker cables are the choice to obtain a lifelike and dynamic sound with an strong presence feeling, better bass response and a more coherent soundstage.

It is also available a High Power version with thicker cables and high power modules. Standard length is 2,5 m + 2,5 m . (Any other lenght may be assembled on request).

Vinculum interconnect cables

The Vinculum interconnect cables are based on special coaxial designs of the highest quality available. This design allows us to work with a more predictable characteristic impedance and linear phase-frequency response. Again, much better than any exotic geometry found in the audio cable market.

Thanks to the ultra-low energy absorption, the protective shielding and the extended flat response through an ultra-wide frequency band, we can assemble cables with the largest lengths and the minimum losses. However, with all interconnect cables, the main problem we have found is not the cable itself, but the large amount of impedance discontinuities faced by the musical signals, from the source electronic board to the amp board. A long chain of equipment chassis connectors, soldering points, ground and signal contacts, cable connectors, etc....may have a cumulative effect which may damage the musical signals far more than the cable itself.

To deal with these problems, we have had to use true coaxial type rca connectors, but it was necessary also to develop exclusive assembling and soldering techniques to minimize any impedance discontinuity inside the connectors.

By using the Vinculum interconnects you will get better bass dynamics, control and definition, with a more natural and real soundstage.

The Vinculum interconnect cables are available in standard lengths of 90 cm. and 180 cm. each pair.

Vinculum XLR cables

Some audiophiles prefer to use XLR interconnects when available, as they feel more clean and dynamic sound than using RCA. Many times their musical equipments does not have a true XLR topology but additional output and input stages used to symmetrize the unbalanced signal and vice versa. Initially, this is contrary to that good High-End audio principle of "less is more", to obtain the purest sound quality.

We believe that the poor quality of many RCA interconnects (supposedly high-end), and the louder sound that XLR provides (for the same amp gain), have helped to this preference.

Even with authentic XLR topologies, the balanced connection represents a duplication of circuits and additional stages in the audio path, useful in professional environments to limit noise capture on long running cables. But, thanks to the technology applied in the Vinculum RCA interconnect, you can obtain more purity and realism of the music reproduction than with any XLR. It is only necessary a volume compensation in the amp for the RCA, as the XLR circuitry usually provides an extra gain of several dBs.

However, for those cases that equipments have a true XLR topology (like the OPPO 105D), and audiophiles who may prefer to use the XLR connection, we have developed also a Vinculum XLR cable with the same technology applied in our other cables.

Vinculum power cables

As any audiophile knows, the power cords have a clear influence on the sound performance of any quality musical equipment. But its effect strongly depends on the equipment design and certain high-end power cables may be even detrimental for the sound quality.

The audio equipments using large storage capacity in their power supplies have a lower sensitivity to the AC cable quality, with respect to those using relatively low value capacitors. In these latter cases most energy is taken directly from the mains, and the power supply presents a very fast changing input impedance values. So better than a very thick power cord with a large current capacity, we prefer to use a cable that can transfer the rapidly changing energy requirements with the highest speed.

Instant energy availability at any fraction of time is a key feature for equipments managing musical signals, while it has no real importance for most other electrical appliances.

Besides the cables, all AC connections have an effect of slowing down the energy transfer. So, far from the general trend to use the typical bulky AC connectors from Furutech, Oyaide,etc..., we have had to select others with much less suggestive appearance, but best suited to minimize any loss of speed.

It is recommended to reduce as far as possible the number of intermediate power strips and distribution blocks, AC cord extensions and AC conditioners. Try to connect the Vinculum power cords directly to a wall AC outlet or to the upcoming Vinculum power distribution block.

Although it may seem counterintuitive , the use of fast power cords does not result in any kind of stress or fatigue while listening music. On the contrary, you should get a more relaxed listening sessions, with a more natural and uncongested soundstage.

The Vinculum power cords are available also in a high power version and standard lengths of 200cm.

Vinculum digital coaxial

Most experienced audiophiles using external D/A converters can detect audible changes in the sound quality when using different cables for digital audio. This may seem inconsistent with the fact that most standard digital cables can ensure an efficient and faultless digital data transmission , even with very high bitrates.

It is well known that the rca connections used in digital audio may generate HF signal reflections, as they cannot match the 75 ohm cable impedance perfectly. But, in addition to this problem, we have identified another kind of distortion in the analog waveform of the digital audio signals, only measurable under certain conditions. This distortion does not represent a problem for the correct data processing made by computers or communication equipments, but may have a subtle collateral effect with musical equipments. If not cancelled, it may lead to generate some undesired frequency products that can reach and modulate the analog audio signals, specially when power supplies are shared for digital and analog sections.

While some audio sources are more sensitive than others to these problems, the degree in which it may result audible depends on the whole musical equipment.

We use the highest quality 75 Ohm cable available and coaxial rca connectors, but it was necessary to develop special assembling and metal soldering techniques to minimize any impedance mismatch between them.

The Vinculum digital coaxial cables are the right choice to obtain the best sound quality available from digital transports and external D/A converters. Standard length is 140 cm.
